Top 10 Coziest Hotels in America

"Set in a wooden glen across from a vineyard in the middle of California's Russian River Valley, the 12-year-old Farmhouse Inn is about as idyllic as it gets. There's a Michelin-starred restaurant (with a master sommelier who brings equal enthusiasm to helping novice wine drinkers and expert oenophiles) and a driver who chauffeurs guests to the nearby wineries in Sonoma and Napa Valleys. The property's butterfly garden has a fire pit where guests can roast s'mores with Valrhona chocolate and the hotel's homemade marshmallows."

Sonoma Country Rustic Luxe:  The Farmhouse Inn
by Gary Walther, Hotel Detective

"The Farmhouse Inn plays the city/country act well. It has a one-Michelin star restaurant (the seventh year it’s held the star) and a sophisticated wine list—sommelier Geoff Kruth is the only certified Master of Wine in Sonoma County. But the produce comes from the ranch of owners Catherine and Joe Bartolomei (sister and brother, not husband and wife) just up the road in Forestville, and a quartet of chickens roam the property. (Granted, they live in a peaked-roof house well padded with straw and furnished with a heat lamp.) Then there is that quintessential inn amenity, a house cat. She’s named Charlotte, she’s the password to the WiFi—don’t count on doing a lot of web surfing out here, though—and the hotel guide urges you to resist her urgings to get into your room."

Family Tree

“In California's picturesque Sonoma County, where hillsides are embroidered with grapevines and meadows are woven woven with apple trees, two siblings returned to the land their great-grandparents lived on and loved.  Here, they created a new life and livelihood that prove they haven't fallen far from the family tree.”

Farm to Massage Table

“There is plenty of crossover between the restaurant and the spa at this luxurious wine country inn—local peach jams might be served at breakfast and also spread on skin. The spa menu is constantly updated to reflect local harvests (expect figs soon), but honey is a year-round staple. For this treatment, fresh honey from the hotel owners' farm is combined with fruit and flowers”

“For runaway pairs, The Farmhouse Inn specializes in two-person to-dos in its garden. The $2,500 Elopement Package wraps up bubbly, photographer, officiant, cake, a couples' massage, and a Michelin-star dinner. It's a wedding and a honeymoon rolled into one.”

“the clapboard house, tucked off a woodsy backroad, seems to spring for a turn-of-the-century idyll. Chef Steve Litke’s cooking springs from whatever is fresh at the market that day: salt roasted pear and Parmesan ravioli or double-cut pork chops graced with a honey and bee pollen glaze. Like everything else here, the desserts are sublime.”

World's 36 Best Food Destinations

“World’s 36 Best Food Destinations… The rooms are modern, the sheets superb, the bathrooms luxurious… What you might not expect in this sleepy rural outpost is the level of sophistication. The signature entrée, rabbit served three ways, is superb. The tine rack – like food for dolls – is as soft as silk. It makes a fine contrast to the leg, which comes wrapped in an assertive mustard sauce, and the loin, three perfect little bites swathed in bacon.”

“For luxury, you can’t beat the rooms at the Farmhouse Inn and Restaurant, just outside of Healdsburg, where cunning architecture creates the illusion of a cozy little farmhouse, complete with barns and a trim little vegetable garden, but behind whose barn walls stand expansive rooms that boast every touch of a truly luxurious boutique hotel, from sumptuous linens to a bathtub in which you could practice your backstroke”

America’s 30 Great Inns

“Top 30 Inns in America. Where do you prefer to be pampered—bedroom or bath? Bath people, consider a restored 1873 Sonoma County farmhouse inn, painstakingly refurbished by a fourth-generation wine-growing family, swathed in roses and morning glories, with private redwood sauna, whirlpool tub for two, lots of bath teas and gels, and oversized towels to cocoon in. There are bike rides, a swimming pool, a lavishly praised restaurant. But who cares? You'd have to leave your room. And that's just not an option.”

Top 10 Chic Hotels

“Top 10 Chic Hotels. The mid-summer dry heat in the Russian River Valley wine country will permeate your bones and release all twitchy, nerve-frayed exhaustion weighing you down almost instantly. If only I could absorb it quite soon at the Farmhouse Inn & Restaurant, which has just added eight new rooms in its luxury "barn." Their Michelin-starred restaurant usually tops the best of Northern California lists, which is saying a huge amount, and breakfast is included with stay — delightful”

“Top 19 New Spas. Farm to table treatment is better than it sounds. The news: Fifteen minutes from the nearest town, the famed Farmhouse Inn sits in blissful isolation that’s reason enough to head north—but the Michelin-starred restaurant isn’t bad, either. Now Peggy Francis and Loma Alexander (of Auberge du Soleil fame), the team behind the newly upgraded spa located in the property’s carriage house, have created an equally scrumptious menu of almost edible treatments. The mood: Farmy and real. Reason to spa: You won’t end up with 20/20 vision, but you’ll have perfectly buffed skin—and no clue what time it is outside the rabbit hole.”
