Cheese, seeds, and whales...loving life in Sonoma County

Our guests here at the Farmhouse sometimes think Sonoma County is only about the wine - especially after a crazy weekend of Barrel Tasting along the wineroad.  This next weekend is the second of the scheduled Barrel Tasting weekends and we shall report further on that later...there are sure to be some highlights reported by our guests.

But there are so many more reasons why we live here...so here is

Beyond Wine Tasting in Sonoma County

 1. Cheese - A guest from Rhode Island mentioned what a great experience they had at Joe Matos Cheese factory (appt. only) and it got me to thinking of all the wonderful cheese makers in the area.  Our guests love Soyoung's cheeses from Andante Dairy but she is small and not open to the public.

Take a look at this week's Press Democrat article.

right, of Valley Ford Cheese Co., and her son Joe Moreda separate curds from whey as they make Estero Gold cheese."

And right around the corner is the Artisan Cheese Festival March 25-27th. More great cheese at Springhill Cheese, Cowgirl Creamery, Bellweather Farms, and Redwood Hill. And those you can visit.

 2. Seeds - this article (again in the Press Democrat this weekend) is about the Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Bank in Petaluma housed in... of course, an old bank.  We talk so much about the organic, sustainable farming in Sonoma county but this is just... beyond cool!

  3.  Whales - I promised you whales - about 20,000 of them.  The gray whales (did you know their tongue can weigh about 500#?) are headed north along our coast each spring for the summer feeding season. (Could it be time to think about summer already?) Head out to the Ocean Overlook at Bodega Head - Let's name all the whales- did you know if you name something, you can't kill it?

What is your favorite thing to do in Sonoma County-  besides wine tasting that is?

Let's talk about wine tasting next week sometime.
