MOTHER'S DAY IN WINE COUNTRY- MUCH MORE THAN BRUNCH!
All different kinds of Mom's out there and what do they really want for Mother's Day? Maybe just a little extra love and attention on this day to celebrate all their hard work and devotion to the family. I always used to celebrate the day with my parents and a big birthday family get together (their birthdays were the 10th and 11th of May so were always right around the day). Sure miss that big day with all the family around but can look forward to a little extra love from my boys I am sure (their wives are on it!).
The traditional gifts include flowers, chocolates, a lazy morning brunch with the family (or even breakfast in bed) but here in the wine country we can do a little better than that. Here are some extra special ideas for that very unique and special mom you are honoring this weekend...What do you think she might like the best?
This Sunday we have the Amgen tour for the cycling
enthusiast mom and the Lifestyle Festival at the finish
of the race in downtown Santa Rosa. I heard this
morning the good news that our local hero and recently injured Levi will actually be able to race this weekend,
after all. Food, Music, and the excitement of the race!
For something for those moms that connect with water sports we have canoeing and kayaking with the Great Russian River Race in Healdsburg on Saturday. The race can be a competitive dash for the hardcore or a relaxing dip in the river for the rest of us. The weather promises to be perfect and major fun is promised with live music, food and wine.
A couple of tamer things for the gardening and flower loving mom...roses galore (650 varieties at last count) over at the Russian River Rose Company on Sunday. There's a little gift shop and a nursery is on site so she can take some to plant at home and enjoy longer. All moms receive a special little gift, too!
Dragonfly Floral (also in Healdsburg-you can fit in both if she is really serious!) is having an open house all weekend. They invite you to come and use flowers from the garden to make your own lovely gift. They have vases available - each vase will be priced by size and you can fill it with as much as you you would like for the set price. Bring the kids and let them do flowers for mom. Experts are there to help! And if you are staying at Farmhouse Inn we invite you to wander the gardens collecting your own bouquet. Everything is blooming wonderfully right now. The roses are CRAZY!
Activities abound for the cooking mom but we are not letting her cook this day. Perhaps she might like to venture out for some light snacking at the wineries. West Sonoma County Wineries are honoring mom with "Mom's Taste Free" this weekend. Eleven wineries within eleven miles (just down the road from Farmhouse Inn)- offering special treats, flowers, and discounts on wine purchases. A great way to enjoy the wine country with mom; no cooking, no cleaning- just meander through our beautiful Russian River area!
Spicy beef and beans with Salsa and beer tasting? For the more advenutesome palate and to include a little fun for Dad head for the Petaluma Chili Cookoff in Petaluma. 40 teams competing- that's a lot of Chili!
For the crazy skating buff Mom- how about the Roller Derby Smackdown between the scurvy Pirates and the stealthy Ninjas over at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds on Saturday.
Not up Mom's alley? Tamer and way cooler skating over at Snoopy's Home Ice Arena in Santa Rosa. Make a day of it - after skating take Mom out to eat at the Warm Puppy Cafe, pick her up a little something at the gift shop and visit the Charles Schulz Museum- Mom gets in free!
Your Mom a little more traditional? (Don't you dare say too old!) One of our favorite bakeries is featuring traditional high tea all weekend.
Patisserie Angelica in Sebastopol makes some of our wedding and event cakes and you should have seen the "s'mores" cake they did for one of the Farmhouse Christmas parties. They are pulling out all the stops for Moms -- with tea sandwiches, pastries, warm scones with all the fixins', and your choice of teas.
Spoil Mom a little...Spoil her a lot...but try something a little different!
Happy Mother's Day!!
