The West County Trail: Biking and Butterflies

March 04, 2019

Is there any better feeling than the moment you realize winter is about to give way to spring? As the temperatures begin to rise, folks all across Sonoma County will be lacing up their hiking boots and running shoes (or just slipping on some sandals) to get outside and enjoy the gorgeous natural surroundings that attract visitors from around the world to our little corner of paradise. At the Farmhouse Inn, we’re particularly fond of the West County Trail, a five-and-a-half mile path that connects the charming town of Forestville to the (almost as) charming town of Sebastopol. Paved and level, the West County Trail is perfect for biking. Along the way, you’ll marvel at the many farms and vineyards that adorn the landscape. After arriving in Sebastopol, you’ll no doubt want to explore a bit, though we do recommend one stop in particular: the Hallberg Butterfly Gardens, a nine-acre butterfly sanctuary open seasonally from April 1 to October 31. Call ahead to take advantage of the fascinating guided tour, available by appointment only.

The Hallberg Butterfly Gardens are located at 8687 Oak Grove Avenue, Sebastopol, CA 95472.
